Kayak Instruction

Kayak & paddle board instruction is available to anyone looking to learn a new sport or improve current abilities. Our courses are available to individuals, groups or summer programs looking to improve their skills or train their summer staff. Classes are performed right here at our Merrimack River facility. Participants can work in either a group setting or individual sessions with our instructor. Participants can opt to provide their own kayaks or rent one from us.

This is a great way for anyone thinking about kayaking or paddle boarding to learn the basics without having to purchase a kayak package before trying the sport. Individuals with their own kayaks will simply benefit from the course instruction without the need for a rental. For those of you needing a kayak rental, our regular $35.00 rental rate is discounted to $20.00 for our instruction package.

This course is designed for beginner and novice paddlers. Whether you’ve paddled recreationally for years or never tried it, our Intro to Kayak is a great way to build your skill foundation in a safe, controlled environment. Time will be spent on both dry land and in the water. Instruction will cover the basics of kayaking and discuss everything you need to know to learn the fundamentals of safe paddling. Our comprehensive agenda will encourage and inspire you to get on the water while building confidence in your self assessment. This is where progression in your kayaking officially begins. We guarantee you will leave the course a better paddler than when you began.

**IMPORTANT: This is an active participant course. Please do not wear cotton. Nylon, Lycra, Polyester clothing or anything that can wick water quickly is acceptable attire. Think bathing suits. Also bring a change of clothes for after your lesson. And don’t forget water and snacks to keep your energy up.

  • RaftingStrokes & Rescues is for the novice and intermediate paddler that wants to improve their foundation skill set in a safe, controlled environment. This is where we become one with the water. There is dry instruction in this course, but you’ll find most of your time will be spent on the water. John will teach fluency in paddle movement and how your kayak responds with the paddle. While most of your times will be spent with the paddle, rescues are an essential skill necessary for safety and in some cases survival. John will discuss the basics of rescue to familiarize each of you with those basics. By the end of this course you will be amazed at what your paddle can do for you.


By participating in our instruction programs, the participant accepts all risks associated with related activities. It is important our participants recognize the potential hazards and dangers (although minimal) of water sport recreation and instruction. Participants will be required to climb in and out of kayaks while in the water during self rescue education and such activities pose potential risk. Therefore, Quickwater Canoe & Kayak requires a signed release waiver of responsibility and completed medical survey prior to participation.
